Colin Hanks Talks About THE GOOD GUYS

New episodes of FOX’s cop dramedy THE GOOD GUYS begin airing Friday, September 24 at 9pm/8 central with plenty more fast cars, explosions and crazy antics from Jack Bailey (Colin Hanks) and Dan Stark (Bradley Whitford).

Hot Celebrity Tv caught up with star Colin Hanks as he answered questions about playing the straight man, Jack’s evolving character, and how his wife liked watching him get tased just a little too much.

On why he was drawn to the Jack Bailey character

Colin said he really liked that Jack talked back. He’s not a passive character who stands around being quietly exasperated at the zaniness around him. He expresses himself and is trying to make the world a little less crazy even as he shows a bit of his own crazy.

Colin was drawn to the open relationship between Jack and Dan; Jack lets Dan know how he’s feeling and calls him on his stupidity.

The well-roundedness of the character attracted Colin and he explained that he could see that Jack would evolve.

On Jack’s evolution

Colin said that any time spent with Dan will “lead to run-off” and that Jack will continue to learn that there is right, wrong, and the big space in the middle that’s open for interpretation. Jack will be reminded of how much of Dan’s nonsense, for better or worse, has actually worked. We’ll also see how Jack has accepted Dan for who he is and as a good cop.

Jack will try some new things and there will be moments sprinkled throughout where we see how he’s grown.

On playing the straight man

While Colin admitted that there are times it’s a bit of a challenge to play the straight man and there are also times he wishes he could chew the scenery like everyone else, but mostly he has learned to appreciate the art of the set-up. He tries to set up the jokes for Brad as well as possible because he realizes that it’s not so much who actually gets to say the jokes as it is how and how well the joke is delivered.

On counting the bruises

Shooting The Good Guys is physically demanding, and Colin laughed that he wishes people who tell him that he’s good in the show rather than funny because of the pain he’s in. He said he and Brad have about the same amount of action and he has the thrown-out neck from the “Silvio’s Way” episode to prove it. He joked that the stunts are most fun when they’re done and counting the bruises.

On cast chemistry

Colin said that they’re lucky in that the cast really likes each other and have a good time on set. They keep it light and fun, and guest stars always remark that it’s a great set to visit. Colin said that he’s having a blast making The Good Guys and playing Jack.

On the move to Fridays

According to Colin, he’s happy with wherever and whenever FOX chooses to air The Good Guys and they just want to entertain as many people as possible as well as possible.

On ad-libbing

There isn’t much actual improv during shooting. Colin complimented the writers for setting up all the scenes so well on the page and explained that the set-up for the scenes are always set in stone, but that they get to add little variable.

According to Colin, Brad is very good at throwing out random things and phrases and making everyone laugh. Sometimes Colin will threw out something that he said, “puts a button on the scene,” but then Brad “puts a button on the button.” Colin said Brad’s always one-upping him.

On Brad’s manny panties in “Silvio’s Way”

Colin missed the first day Brad was shot in his neon green manny panties because he was off getting married, and he said that on his first day back, the camera was running as Brad stripped and unveiled the panties and there is a long shot of Colin just cracking up.

On being tased

Colin had seen a video of someone being tased and using a Chewbacca voice, so he told director Jonathan Frakes he wanted to do a special voice, but he hadn’t known until the episode aired what he would actually sound like. He said the arm motion came about because Jack’s reaction had to be easily identifiable because so many people in the episode imitated it.

On the last day of the shoot, Colin said the entire crew did their impression of Jack being tased, but even more disconcerting was his wife’s reaction. Colin said she not only laughed hard, but it was a different laugh than he had ever heard her use before and she had to watch the scene three or four times. He joked that it made him question the nature of their relationship.
